Sexta-feira, Alta Tristeza
2022
Photos: Gonçalo Duarte

This book started with the perception of a repetitive linguistic pattern, an apocalyptic tone identified by leafing through a pile of Ípsilon's (weekly cultural supplement of Público newspaper). Cut outs were made, and then collages, composed in the format of visual poetry. This book was printed with the essential support of the Centro Nacional de Cultura and Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte.

A domesticidade não pertence (apenas) ao espaço da casa
2022 @ Purga
Fotografia Isabel Cordovil

This text was written in the context and as an introduction to Joana Tejo's solo exhibition at Purga, a project by Isabel Cordovil and Rudi Brito. This exhibition was held in the space of a house, between the end of a stay and the restart of a home with a new tenant. It refers to the space of the house as the space of choreographies of care and practices of attention to objects and matter that are present in Joana's artistic practice.

LOVE MAKES US DRUNK
2022 @ Ciclo das Amizades
Photos: Inês Brites

Love makes us drunk, Love makes us very drunk, Love makes us very very drunk

Love Makes us Drunk was presented as a performative exhibition in pop up format and with a duration of one day, inserted in the context of the cycle of friendships - organization of a cycle of sharing moments in Inês Brites' atelier, together with her friends. This was a work carried out in partnership with Inês Brites and with the participation of Maura Carneiro as performer and Tarot reader. Understanding that Love, at the beginning of Spring, was the reason for a certain collective delirium, where the emotional state oscillated between euphoria and depression, and also taking Gilbert and George's video performance as a reference, which was paraphrased and brought into the political context of intimacy, a scenario was prepared to host a reading of love destinies.

O FOGO DO FÍGADO is a publication that brings together fleeting and fiery clippings and notes, moderated by a playful revision of the gall bladder, which celebrates the control of the fire but not the end of the fascination for flames, flames, tongues of fire, matches, lighters, firelighters and other incendiary material. It also celebrates the passing of three decades, in relation to the anniversary exhibition MY LEFT IS YOUR RIGHT.

Círculo (Circle) begins by saying that much is written about the future, but the truth is that the only thing possible for us is to rewrite the past, because the past is a place without time. This is a tale that, appearing to be a romantic story, takes as its fundamental theme the isolation and decay of human support networks through exercises of power. This book was published by Edições da Ruína, with cover silkscreen printing by Gonçalo Duarte and pagination by Ana Baliza.

EXPOSIÇÃO CONCENTRADOS (André Lepecki)
2021 @ Thirdbase, Lisbon
Photos: Ricardo Vieira

Exposição concentrados, held with the curatorial partnership of David Revés, makes use of the concentrated drawings method, a method of attention constructed by Catarina Real that uses informative stimuli in audio format for the realization of visual schemes made from the apprehended discourse. In this exhibition, classes and lectures by André Lepecki were used. To these drawings made directly on the walls of the exhibition, a spatial choreography marked on the floor of the space is added in order to guide the spectator in reading the texts found on the pillars, written by Catarina and David around the issues concerning attention and excess information.

FUTURO FANTASMA - MANUAL DE VIAGEM
2021

FUTURO FANTASMA - MANUAL DE VIAGEM (FANTASMA FUTURE - A TRAVEL MANUAL), written in partnership with José Costa, is a book that brings together proposals for exercises to restore the lost logbooks during the journey to an unknown future. They are intended to be a stimulus to the utopian and dystopian imagination, in order to motivate conscious actions in the present on our part. It is aimed at a young audience and was distributed in Portuguese public schools as a workbook. This book was produced with the essential support of the Direcção Regional da Cultura do Norte.

The Fall/Outcome (THE FALL) is an audio piece that draws a path of shared and continuous interrogations, in a movement that evokes the palimpsest to derive one question by the other. It is a collaborative project with Lorraine Druon, which began in 2018 in Brussels at the time of a residency for X RIVISTA (IT). The artists cooked together and managed to find the state where nobody was the cook and nobody the helper. The first question, which appeared there was: Are you in Love? Themes such as love, collective work, depression and the meaning of existence are recurrently addressed. The collaboration and sound editing was done by Thomas Turbain.

Quarto paisagem (room landscape) is an immersive installation that promotes the experience of contact with the painting, so that it happens in a horizontal position and body relaxation. This installation results from a fascination with sensory stimulation rooms used as therapy for, now more generally, anxiety disorders. This installation chose to approach mainly the proprioceptive sense in coordination with vision. The paintings, installed on the ceiling of this small room isolated from the rest of the exhibition, were made in a game of weird corpse with the artist's different selves, different every day. The cushions distributed over the carpeted floor of the room represent different positions of the artist's body lying on the floor staring at the ceiling, in a choreographic proposal of a lying body.

Desenhos Desatentos
Exposição Colectiva
2020 @ Kubik Gallery, Porto
Photos owned by Kubik Gallery, used with permission

The desenhos desatentos (inattentive drawings) are the result of a practice of attention with expression in drawing, and began in the first confinement of the year 2020. At that time, the artist was unable to proceed with her usual work due to a feeling of breaking with the continuity of life as we know it. She started the process of making drawings while watching series of a criminal nature, which, due to their circular composition, calmed her worries about the alarming state of politics and public health. These drawings acquired, for this reason, particular compositional characteristics, the result of dispersed attention divided between concern and alienation.

olhar todos os dias a mesma parede
2020 @ Paralaxe

Olhar todos os dias a mesma parede (everyday looking at the same wall) arises as a response to the invitation to participate virtually in the Parallax project. Taking as a poem one of the phrases with which the project is presented "In a simple way parallax is the apparent change of an object against a background due to the movement of the observer", also as a response to the strange days of confinement, everyday looking at the same wall is a study of the watertight yet sensitive daily life. It’s presented through the interconnection of words and images that document an emotional state through the daily perspective changes.

The queda series, conceived with the curatorship of Miguel Mesquita, spatialises the idea of falling that is conceived between fall in love and leap of faith. Translating into onomatopoeias each phase of this confused flight of fervour, religious or amorous, it organises each of them by quotas. From SHLAP to UUUU is defined a language trajectory understandable in any language, accentuated by the sensations of suspension, direction and weight.

Eu a pensar (Me thinking) is a graphic composition taken as an expanded poem, which expresses the emotional ambivalence of a period of time, and which is shared without filters. The elements are taken as small dots in a landscape of feelings between anguish and joy, taken by the incomprehension of abrupt passages in everything that concerns the experience of the - mistaken - idea of love.

This set of portable exhibitions is an exhibition-game, where the spectator is also a player and curator. Its construction allows the definition of the exhibition space from the acrylic pieces that allow the fitting in different formats, which will be the first step of the game. In a second moment, the installation of the small pieces, concentrated drawings, mounting accessories and composition takes place. Choosing which exhibition to see from the given possibilities becomes the motto, organised from the conviction that playing is the most serious thing in the world. The project, conceived with the curatorship of David Revés, assumes playfulness as a tool for an affective relationship with objects.

Self Help Self Hope is an installation in a reading room format, whose main work is the book "Pathetic". Pathetic has as a reference the format of self-help literature, from which was identified a structure that repeats itself in different approaches, and where was inserted a less operative and more reflective character. Accompanying Patético are supportive paintings that serve as a place to be for friends - sofas designed to welcome reading time with a hug. On the walls there are words taken from the choreographic exercise of identifying the eight most important words of the day, as a way to start composition processes.

TAMPIS

Photo: Babeth Rambault

Tampis is an exhibition born from a misunderstanding of language. Between Catarina and Babeth Rambault, artist and programmer of the Bien gallery, a small itinerant gallery, and fruit of dialogues that inhabited the no man's land that exists between Portuguese, French and English, the word tampis appeared. A word misheard or misunderstood became the word that aggregates all communicative possibilities, or that is uttered when one does not know what to say. This is the title of the exhibition and the meaning that aggregates the small drawings and compositions that compose it and that make use of sonorities, onomatopoeias and solitary words in languages.

t maiúsculo é igual à raiz quadrada de e maiúsculo vezes t minúsculo sobre quatro (capital t is equal to the square root of capital e times small t over four) is a performance that expresses the line of reasoning around form-forms like the circle and the documentary, the bodies and their learning of movement, the differential between danced movement and practical movement, equations of balance between the triad space, time and work, serendipity and translation, having as background - and impregnated in the body - the language and the machines, that generate movement. It is a project conceived in collaboration with Ângelo Cid Neto.

These mechanisms have been realized and structured by Catarina Real and Ângelo Cid Neto, in a collaboration that began in 2018 and is still active, and are intended as an ongoing attempt to create an autopoietic ecosystem of translation between media.
